We chose this place as we wanted to find a casual restaurant for Sunday brunch and The Laughing Gravy seemed the perfect option. Situated 5 minutes from Southwalk tube station this unpretentious restaurant sits on a side street along with a number of other cafes, galleries and houses.
The restaurant is long rather than wide. It is situated on two levels both reserved for diners. It is light and airy and perfect for families. We were welcomed by bohemian waiters who seated us at the other end of the restaurant on the levered floor. There was a group of us so we were situated on a large round table. The service was friendly and relaxed although a little slow at some times.
For starters we ordered the wild venison croquettes and beef carpaccio. The croquettes were delicious with the dark hearty meat combined with the fluffy potatoes. The crisp outer layer contrasted with the fluffiness of the potatoes. The beef carpaccio was a lot smaller dish than the filling croquettes, which meant that the diners that ordered the croquettes, were pretty smug with their choice.
For main course almost everyone ordered the beef Sunday Roast which was served with crispy potatoes, red cabbage and a large fluffy yet crisp Yorkshire pudding. The beef was rare and so succulent it melted in the mouth like butter. I was the only one who chose a different dish; I ordered the chicken salad with aubergines, squash and feta. The salad was delicious and full of flavour; However I think it could have been improved with more chicken, to add a meatier texture to the dish.
For dessert we shared an apple crumble, treacle tart and sorbets. The crumble was deep filled, piping hot and the apple and raspberry fruit had almost melted into a mush. The treacle tart was sweet and insanely sugary as any treacle tart should be and this was contrasted with the sharp tangy flavour of the apple, lemon and strawberry sorbet.
I really liked this restaurant for its relaxed friendly vibe and simple yet tasty well thought out dishes. My only complaint is that we did have to wait a long time to be served but food came out promptly considering how busy this place is throughout the weekend. As a result we give The Laughing Gravy
