Sleeping Beauty Pop-Up Dining Experience – Sadler’s Wells

We had tickets to see Sleeping Beauty, the modern dance performance by the magnificent Matthew Bourne at the Sadler’s Wells. We found through pure luck (as it was poorly advertised) that the theatre offered a Pop-Up Dining Experience on one floor of the building. We are not sure if this happens for ad hoc performances or was a one-off, we have certainly not seen this before.

The pop-up restaurant was themed as the dance production ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and had a deep red and black lace bed, woodland images projected on the walls and decaying flowers on the tables. When you book the restaurant you have to place your order ahead so that they can get it ready. The table is set with your food order from 6.30pm onwards and the food is left on the table (cling filmed, don’t panic) as there are only cold options available.

There are no starter options, just main course, dessert and coffees. We just went for the main course as we knew we would be strapped for time. I pre-ordered salmon with a sauerkraut salad and my friend ordered a cheese Quiche with a pickled salad.

The table was set with paper white napkins and apart from the decaying rose, little thought had gone into the table decoration and even the bed in the middle of the dining room floor looked a little tacky.

The salmon was well cooked and a nice light meal and the Quiche was dense and rich although the flavour would have been enhanced if warmer. We were short on time and this place allowed us to eat and not been constantly clock watching, which on this occasion suited us perfectly. It was a unique way to have a pre-theatre dinner and we are really glad we tried this place. I am not saying that I will not go again as it really is handy but if time is on your side and you are hungry they are plenty of other restaurants in the area that would offer similar if not better food. As a result Sex Drugs and Bacon Rolls gives the Sleeping Beauty Pop-Up Dining Experience – Sadler’s Wells:
